Brandon Leonardo is one of the three co-founders of Instacart, the San Francisco grocery delivery company that went public in 2023 at a valuation of about $10 billion. No reputable outlet has published an estimate of his net worth, and his ownership stake has not been reported in the sources we checked. The $12.5 million figure that appeared on this page before had no source and has been removed. It also described him mainly as an "individual investor" who later became a co-founder, which gets the order of his career backwards: he built the first versions of the Instacart app in 2012.

What is Brandon Leonardo's net worth?

There is no figure for Leonardo from Forbes, Bloomberg or Celebrity Net Worth. Founders of large startups usually hold equity, but the size of his stake, how much he sold and when are not public in the reporting we found. Without those numbers, any estimate would be a guess, and this page does not offer one.

What can be documented is the value of the company he helped start. Instacart, whose legal name is Maplebear Inc., priced its initial public offering at $30 a share on September 18, 2023, raising $660 million and giving it a market value of around $10 billion, the Associated Press reported. That was far below the $39 billion valuation the company had announced in early 2021. Its shares trade on Nasdaq under the symbol CART.

Salary and income

Leonardo's pay has not been disclosed in the sources we checked. The earlier version of this page listed a yearly income of $500,000 with monthly and daily breakdowns; there was no source for it, and it has been removed. As a co-founder, most of any wealth he has would come from Instacart equity rather than salary.

Founding Instacart

Apoorva Mehta, a former Amazon supply chain engineer, started Instacart in the summer of 2012 and got into Y Combinator that year. He met his co-founders, Max Mullen and Leonardo, while finishing the Y Combinator program, according to Contrary Research. Leonardo, the engineer of the three, built the early versions of the app, according to his Y Combinator profile.

In a November 2015 post on the company's engineering blog, Leonardo described how far the company had come in three years: from two app servers on Heroku and one small database to a large AWS infrastructure, from three personal shoppers to more than 10,000, and from three people in a conference room to an engineering, product and design team of about 100. He set out the team's values as putting customers first, ownership, urgency and quality.

In a 2017 interview with PagerDuty, he credited Instacart's ability to scale to hiring engineers with experience running large systems, making engineers own as much of the stack as possible, and separating the parts of the site that must never fail, such as ordering and signup.

Recent work on AI (2024 to 2026)

Leonardo has become one of Instacart's public voices on artificial intelligence. At Lightspeed Venture Partners' Generative SF meetup in January 2024, he discussed how Instacart uses AI chatbots and large language models, noting that meal planning was one of the first things people asked ChatGPT for help with. At Ray Summit 2024 he gave a 16-minute talk on how generative AI had changed both Instacart's product and its internal productivity, according to Class Central's listing of the video.

Instacart has continued in that direction. On December 8, 2025, it announced an app inside ChatGPT that lets users build a grocery cart and pay without leaving the conversation, the first ChatGPT app to support checkout end to end, according to a January 2026 summary of the launch.

Education and early career

Leonardo holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from San Jose State University, according to his founder profile on Y Combinator. Before Instacart he held senior engineering roles at startups including AngelList, Webs and StartupBus. The same profile says he built the early versions of the Instacart app and later led the engineering team working on growth, with the informal title "Grocery Hacker."

The earlier version of this page also claimed a master's degree and gave his age, height and weight and described a wife. None of that could be confirmed in a reputable source, so it has been removed. It also called him an adviser to StartupBus; his Y Combinator profile describes an engineering role there instead.

Why no figure is given

Instacart's market value is public, but a co-founder's share of it depends on dilution over many funding rounds and on stock sales that we could not find reported for Leonardo. Mehta, as founder and longtime CEO, was the most visible shareholder; Leonardo's holdings have not been the subject of reporting. Until a reputable outlet publishes an estimate, his net worth is unknown.
