No reputable outlet has published an estimate of Alex Melvin's net worth. The $30 million figure that appeared on this page before had no source, and it looks far too low for someone in his position: Melvin is owner and chairman of Rural King, which calls itself America's largest privately owned farm and home retailer and which, according to the Illinois Business Journal, has passed $2.5 billion in annual revenue. Because the family-owned company does not publish profits or a valuation, no reliable figure for his wealth exists.
What is Alex Melvin's net worth?
Melvin's wealth rests on his ownership of Rural King and its sister company, Rural King Real Estate, which manages about 20 million square feet of property. Neither company is publicly traded, and no Forbes list or business publication has estimated what the Melvin family's stake is worth. Revenue of $2.5 billion is not profit, and ownership may be shared among family members, so we do not attempt a number.
The earlier version of this page also described him as CEO. Since 2023 he has been owner and chairman; the CEO title belongs to Steve Barbarick, according to the company's own releases.

Family history of Rural King
Rural King began in 1960 as a single store in Mattoon, Illinois, founded by farmers Kermit Speer and Keith Beaird, according to the company. Speer was Melvin's great-uncle, and Melvin's father, Gary Melvin, later ran the company as CEO. Gary Melvin also served on the board of First Mid Bancshares for more than 30 years until 2020.
Melvin told the Journal Gazette & Times-Courier that his earliest memories of the business go back to about age 5: sweeping the warehouse floor, riding in the semi with his father to deliver to stores, and spending weekends in the family van driving to store openings.
Career
He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in management from Monmouth College, then worked for a construction company for a few years before returning to Rural King as the Mattoon store manager in 2008. He moved up through roles including vice president and CEO, and was named owner and chairman in 2023, the Illinois Business Journal reported.

How he runs the business
In his 2025 interview with the Journal Gazette & Times-Courier, Melvin said Rural King's edge is a family-friendly store, with free popcorn and coffee, live animals and events, combined with a wide product range at low prices. As the chain has grown, he said, consistent processes and developing talented managers have become essential, and e-commerce and AI tools have forced the company to keep changing.
He described the Mattoon operation in detail: about 650 people work at the headquarters, distribution center and trucking hub on Illinois 121, the Mattoon warehouse supplies roughly 40% of stores, and the rest are served from a distribution network based in Waverly, Ohio. Up to 40 trucks leave Mattoon each day.
