No reputable publication has estimated Dr. Dominic J. Bagnoli's net worth. The earlier version of this page gave two different unsourced figures ($30.3 million and $22 million), so both have been removed. What is documented is the company he built: Bagnoli, an emergency physician from Canton, Ohio, founded Emergency Medicine Physicians and in 2015 created US Acute Care Solutions (USACS), a majority physician-owned emergency medicine and hospitalist group. In 2021 funds managed by Apollo Global Management committed up to $470 million of preferred equity to USACS, according to Apollo.

What is Dominic J. Bagnoli's net worth?

USACS is private, and its ownership is spread across its physician partners. The size of Bagnoli's personal stake has not been reported, and no outlet has published an estimate of his wealth. The earlier version of this page also listed an annual income of about $1.1 million; that had no source and has been removed.

US Acute Care Solutions: the business behind his wealth

USACS staffs and runs hospital emergency departments, hospitalist services and observation units under contracts with health systems. It sells itself on physician ownership: doctors who work for it can own shares.

  • Origins: Bagnoli founded the predecessor company, Emergency Medicine Physicians of Canton, and had been building it for about 25 years by 2018, the Akron Beacon Journal reported. In a 2021 statement he said USACS was created in 2015.
  • 2018 size: USACS ran about 210 emergency rooms in 22 states, employed about 4,000 people and had about 400 staff at its Canton headquarters, the Beacon Journal reported.
  • 2021 recapitalization: Apollo funds committed up to $470 million in preferred equity, which paid for the exit of the previous minority investor, private equity firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, while leaving USACS majority-controlled by its physician owners. Two Apollo representatives joined the board.
  • 2022 size: The Lever, a news outlet critical of private equity in health care, reported that USACS had about 500 contracts in 30 states and that Apollo had agreed to buy a total of $711 million of USACS preferred stock across several deals. The company told The Lever that Apollo is a lender with no operational control.

2021As executive chairman, led the Apollo recapitalization

When he handed the CEO role to James Frary, a former president of AmerisourceBergen Specialty Group, Bagnoli told the Beacon Journal he was not retiring or slowing down, and that as executive chairman he would focus on strategy, business development and hospital partnerships while building on the physician-ownership model. Dr. Peter Hudson, the founding chairman of the USACS board, stayed on as a director.

The 2017 Summa Health controversy

On New Year's Day 2017, USACS replaced the physician group that had staffed Summa Health's emergency rooms in the Akron area for about 40 years, after contract talks broke down. The Akron Beacon Journal reported that more than 250 Summa doctors voted no confidence in the health system's leadership, and that critics raised a possible conflict of interest because Bagnoli's wife was Summa's chief medical officer; Summa said she was not involved in the selection. Summa's CEO later resigned, and the health system lost its emergency medicine residency accreditation that year. In 2018 Bagnoli told the paper his move to executive chairman was his own long-planned decision and had nothing to do with Summa, which he noted was five of the company's more than 200 emergency departments.

Dominic J. Bagnoli's wife

Bagnoli is married to Dr. Vivian von Gruenigen, a physician who was Summa Health's chief medical officer in 2017, according to the Beacon Journal. The earlier version of this page described a wife without naming her or giving any source.

Education

The earlier version of this page said Bagnoli earned his MD at Wright State University. We could not confirm that in a source we opened, so we have not repeated it. Apollo's release lists him as Dominic Bagnoli, MD, FACEP, FAAEM, fellowships of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Age, height and weight

The Beacon Journal gave his age as 55 in April 2018, which puts his birth around 1962 or 1963. The age of 50 on the old page was wrong, and its height, weight and exercise routine were unsourced; all have been removed.

Why there is no reliable estimate

USACS is a large, valuable company, but its value, debts and physician ownership split are private, and Apollo's preferred stock sits ahead of common shareholders. Without knowing Bagnoli's share, any figure would be a guess.
