From prison to Harvard

Norman wrote in Fast Company that he was once sentenced to more than 100 years in prison and rose through the gang system to become a prison boss in a maximum-security facility. The Post and Courier reported that this was in the Massachusetts prison system in the 1990s. He wrote that during two years in solitary confinement he set himself the goal of getting to Harvard, and he was released after 14 years. In 2015 he earned a fellowship at Harvard Law School.

He has since worked with groups at risk in Honduras, the Bahamas, Sweden, Guatemala, Liberia and Trinidad, according to the Columbia Daily Herald, and has been given the nickname "Ambassador of Hope."

Prison programs

South Carolina, 2019

After a 2018 gang riot at Lee Correctional Institution left seven inmates dead, the worst U.S. prison riot in a quarter century, the South Carolina Department of Corrections brought in Norman's Academy of Hope team. The Post and Courier reported in 2019 that the year-long program started with 10 volunteer inmates living together and taking counseling, leadership and peer-training classes, with plans to grow to 80. Corrections officials said it was the first time the department had invited a former inmate to build a program for violent offenders from scratch. Corrections Director Bryan Stirling said he was hesitant at first but came to see that Norman could engage inmates in ways most staff could not. Norman told the paper he used the riot to push the men to prove to their families that they could do better, and said there were very few programs anywhere designed for violent offenders.

New York, 2025

In September 2025, New York's Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Norman and Securus launched a Second Chance University Wellness Tour through 15 state prisons, including Attica, Auburn, Clinton and Green Haven, running from September 8 to October 15, according to a press release. Former NBA player Eddy Curry was part of the team, and the content was made available on 550,000 Securus tablets nationwide.
