In this article
Brett Jefferson is the founder, president and co-chief investment officer of Hildene Capital Management, a Stamford, Connecticut credit manager he started in 2008 with $5 million and grew past $15 billion in assets by 2024. No reputable publisher, including Forbes, Bloomberg or Celebrity Net Worth, has estimated his personal net worth. But a December 2025 deal in which Jefferies agreed to pay $340 million in cash, plus existing interests, for half of Hildene shows that his firm is worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
What is Brett Jefferson's net worth?
An earlier version of this page gave $14.4 million, with income of $480,000 a year. Neither figure came from a reputable source, and both look far too low for the founder of a firm of Hildene's size. They have been removed. We do not give a replacement number because his ownership share of Hildene, and how much of the Jefferies payment goes to him, have not been disclosed.
Here is what is public. Jefferies Financial Group agreed to buy a 50% stake in Hildene for $340 million in cash plus interests it already held, Alternatives Watch reported on December 9, 2025. The deal formed Hildene Holding Company as the parent of the asset manager and was expected to close in the third quarter of 2026. In March 2026 he also bought a minority stake in the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes, a team valued at $2.66 billion in the stake sale Sportico reported.

Where the money comes from
- Ownership of Hildene. As founder, he is presumably a major owner of the firm. Jefferies' price for half of Hildene is the best public guide to what the whole business is worth.
- Investment returns. Founders of credit funds typically invest their own money alongside clients and share in performance fees. Hildene is private and does not publish these figures.
- Sports stakes. Minority interests in the Carolina Hurricanes (NHL) and the Oshawa FireWolves of the National Lacrosse League.
Hildene Capital Management
Jefferson launched Hildene in 2008 after working at Marathon Asset Management. His first big trade was in trust preferred securities (TruPS), hybrid debt issued by small community banks and pooled into CDOs. As the financial crisis hit, he called banks across the country to work out which ones would survive, The Hedge Fund Journal reported in a 2024 profile naming him one of its "50 Giants." About 500 U.S. banks failed between 2007 and 2012, but Hildene had very little direct exposure to the TruPS that defaulted.
The firm later branched into collateralized loan obligations, asset-backed securities and residential mortgage bonds, and Dushyant Mehra joined as co-CIO in 2016. Hildene has also gone to court against other investors in CDO structures when it believed their actions hurt noteholders. More recently it launched Hildene Re, a reinsurance company. In December 2025 it agreed to buy SILAC Insurance Company, an annuity provider with about $10 billion in assets, for $550 million.

Recent changes (2025–2026)
Two deals made 2025 and 2026 the biggest years of his career. The Jefferies transaction gave Hildene a large, permanent backer as it added an insurance balance sheet through SILAC.
On March 12, 2026, the Hurricanes announced that Jefferson, former Arch Capital CEO Marc Grandisson and former NHL player Bobby Farnham had each bought minority interests, with Tom Dundon keeping majority control, according to the team and AP. WRAL noted that Sportico had reported Dundon was selling a 12.5% stake at a $2.66 billion valuation. The team did not say how that stake was divided among the three buyers.
Early life, education and lacrosse
Jefferson comes from what The Hedge Fund Journal called a three-generation seafaring family. He has said school was sometimes hard for him and that seeing things differently became his biggest advantage. He played lacrosse at Syracuse University and was part of the team that won the 1988 national championship. In 2023 Syracuse named him one of five LetterWinners of Distinction, an award for former athletes who went on to success after college. Hildene now sponsors lacrosse causes, including the Tewaaraton Foundation's Haudenosaunee scholarships.
The old page claimed a Northwestern bachelor's degree and a Syracuse master's, plus an age of 54 and a height and weight. We found no source for any of those details, and they have been removed. His graduation year suggests he was born in the mid-1960s, but his exact age has not been published.
Family
According to the Hurricanes, Jefferson lives in Durham, North Carolina, with his wife, Cathy, and their three children. He supports the Catherine Jefferson Foundation, Team IMPACT and the Tewaaraton Foundation. The earlier version of this page named his wife as "Samaria"; that was wrong and has been corrected.
Net worth compared
Other founders and investors profiled here include Brett Hurt and Brett Hitt. Among hedge fund founders, Jefferson's public footprint is small, but the Jefferies price tag and his NHL stake put him in a different wealth bracket from the figure this page used to show.
Why no figure is given
An honest estimate would need his percentage of Hildene before and after the Jefferies deal, his share of the $340 million cash payment, his personal investments in Hildene funds, and what he paid for his Hurricanes stake. None of that has been disclosed. We will add a figure if Forbes, Bloomberg or another reputable outlet publishes one.
