There is no net worth figure for Albert Fantrau because there is no evidence he is a real, identifiable person. The name comes from a viral story in which Cristiano Ronaldo credits a boyhood teammate who passed up a goal so that Ronaldo could win a place at Sporting Lisbon's academy, and then rewards him with a house and a car. No record of a footballer by that name exists, no reliable source has ever interviewed him, and the story's details conflict with Ronaldo's documented career.
What Is Albert Fantrau's Net Worth?
An earlier version of this page said Fantrau was a 47-year-old professional footballer and national team captain worth $1 million, earning $6 million a year. None of that had a source. We could not find any club, league, national team or transfer record for a player called Albert Fantrau, and the page's own numbers contradicted each other (a $6 million salary and a $1 million fortune). All of it has been removed.
Because the person in the story cannot be identified, there is nothing to value. The only real money in the tale belongs to Ronaldo himself: Forbes put Ronaldo's net worth at $1.2 billion in its real-time listing in September 2026, and said Al-Nassr pays him more than $200 million a year.
Albert Fantrau's Yearly Earnings, Monthly Income and Salary
The old page listed a yearly income of $6 million, $500,000 a month and $17,000 a day. There is no contract, club payroll or reported salary behind any of those numbers. With no verified career, there is no salary to report. The claim in the viral story that Fantrau is unemployed but lives comfortably on gifts from Ronaldo is also unconfirmed.
The Viral Story
The usual version, repeated on social media for more than a decade, goes like this:
- Ronaldo and Albert Fantrau play for the same youth side in an under-18 match.
- A scout or manager from Sporting Lisbon says whichever player scores more goals will join the academy.
- With the score at 2-0, Fantrau rounds the goalkeeper but passes to Ronaldo instead of shooting. Ronaldo scores and gets the place.
- Asked why, Fantrau says Ronaldo was the better player.
- Years later a journalist finds Fantrau living in a large house with a car and learns that Ronaldo paid for them.
The quote at the heart of the story is attributed to Ronaldo but has never been traced to a named interview, broadcast or publication. Times Now, which retold it in October 2024, attributed the quote to "a previous interview published on Medium" and used the word "reportedly," without naming the outlet that supposedly interviewed Ronaldo or the journalist who supposedly visited Fantrau.
Where the Story Came From
The tale spread widely in May 2014, just after Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the Champions League final in Lisbon. Ronaldo ran to the stands and hugged a man, and posts on social media claimed that man was his old friend Albert Fantrau, spelled "Frantau" in some versions.
According to a May 2014 report by Live Soccer TV, the man was in fact Ronaldo's brother, Hugo Aveiro, who ran Ronaldo's museum in Madeira. The same report noted that a second viral explanation, about a sobriety pact between the brothers, was also denied: it cited Spanish sports paper AS as saying there was no truth to it and that Hugo was considering legal action.
So the moment that made the Fantrau story go viral was misidentified from the start.
Why the Story Does Not Fit Ronaldo's Real Career
Ronaldo's youth career is well documented. According to his Wikipedia biography, which draws on club records, he played for Andorinha from 1992 to 1995 and Nacional from 1995 to 1997, then joined Sporting CP's youth system in 1997, when he was 12. He moved up to Sporting's senior side in 2002 and signed for Manchester United in 2003.
| Years | Club | Level |
|---|---|---|
| 1992–1995 | Andorinha | Youth |
| 1995–1997 | Nacional | Youth |
| 1997–2002 | Sporting CP | Youth |
| 2002–2003 | Sporting CP | Senior |
| 2003–2009 | Manchester United | Senior |
That timeline rules out the viral version. Ronaldo was already in Sporting's academy at 12, so he could not have earned his place there by scoring in an under-18 match. A 2015 analysis on Constative made the same point and added that his move from Nacional to Sporting involved talks between the two clubs, followed by a trial in Lisbon, not a goal-scoring contest. It also noted that academies judge players on skills such as first touch, awareness and passing, not on who scores more in one game.
Is Albert Fantrau Real?
We found no evidence that he is. There is no player registration, match report, photo with a verified caption or interview with anyone of that name. The accounts of him on social media repeat the same text, often word for word, and none gives a hometown, club or date. People who search for "Albert Fantrau fake" or "Albert Fantrau real" are asking the right question: the reliable record does not support the story.
The earlier version of this page added invented details: a childhood in "a small town in the middle of nowhere," a teenage rock band that toured the country, a university degree, a wife, and a height of 5 feet 8 inches. None of it came from any source, and it has all been deleted.
Who Are Ronaldo's Real Close Friends?
Ronaldo's family and friends are often named in coverage of him. The man he hugged in Lisbon in 2014 was his brother Hugo, according to Live Soccer TV. His long-time agent is Jorge Mendes of Gestifute, according to Forbes. None of the reliable coverage we reviewed mentions an Albert Fantrau.

How We Checked This Story
We searched for any club, national team or competition record under the name Albert Fantrau or Albert Frantau, looked for the original source of the Ronaldo quote, and compared the story with Ronaldo's documented youth career. The quote has no traceable origin, the 2014 hug that made it go viral involved Ronaldo's brother, and the timeline does not fit. We will update this page if a credible outlet ever identifies and interviews a real Albert Fantrau.
